ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESILIENCE (AIR)

Cyber Defense Center's AIR program with three astronaut career paths.

A CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE EXPERIENCE IN ADVANCED TRAINING

AIR™ (Artificial Intelligence Resilience) is the Cyber Defense Center's flagship research, engineering, and readiness program for sustaining mission critical operations in organizations that depend upon Artificial Intelligence. Beyond training and certification, AIR™ encompasses AI operational resilience, continuity planning, resilience engineering, advisory services, applied research, and realistic mission simulations that prepare organizations to anticipate, withstand, recover from, and adapt to disruptions affecting AI enabled operations.

As Artificial Intelligence becomes embedded in business processes, engineering, decision making, and autonomous operations, organizations are creating a new class of operational dependency. AIR™ establishes the emerging discipline of AI Operational Resilience, extending proven business continuity, disaster recovery, emergency management, and consequence informed engineering practices to intelligent enterprises. The program prepares organizations to identify critical AI dependencies, engineer resilient architectures, develop continuity strategies, exercise recovery procedures, and maintain mission effectiveness when AI systems become unavailable, degraded, compromised, or no longer trustworthy.

Unlike traditional AI training that focuses on developing or securing AI systems, AIR™ prepares organizations to sustain the mission. Through immersive, NASA inspired simulations, participants assume specialized operational roles across Flight Operations, Mission Control, and Systems Engineering, learning to coordinate people, processes, and technology under realistic mission conditions. Students may specialize in a single discipline or complete all three career paths to earn the distinguished Mission Commander designation.

AIR™ research and services include:

  • AI Operational Resilience: AI dependency analysis, mission critical process identification, resilience engineering, graceful degradation, and continuous availability planning.
  • Business Continuity & Recovery: AI business impact analysis, continuity strategies, recovery objectives, contingency planning, recovery validation, and operational restoration.
  • Mission Simulation & Exercises: Multi role simulations, mission rehearsals, continuity exercises, crisis coordination, recovery operations, and leadership under pressure.
  • Consequence Informed Systems Engineering: Fault tolerant architectures, redundancy, capacity planning, observability, recoverability, and resilient AI system design.
  • Governance & Mission Assurance: AI operational governance, resilience metrics, mission readiness assessments, assurance programs, and continuous capability improvement.

As AIR™ evolves alongside the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence, it provides organizations with a practical, capability based framework for ensuring that intelligent systems remain resilient when failure is not an option. The program helps organizations move beyond implementing AI to engineering enterprises capable of sustaining critical missions through disruption, uncertainty, and change.

GROUND CONTROL PATH

Guide the Mission

The Ground Control track prepares planners, coordinators, continuity professionals, emergency managers, and executive leaders responsible for directing AI enabled operations before, during, and after disruptive events. As organizations become increasingly dependent upon Artificial Intelligence, Ground Control develops the operational mindset required to anticipate risk, coordinate resources, manage uncertainty, and sustain the mission under changing conditions.

Inspired by the discipline and precision of NASA's Mission Control Center, students begin as Test Pilots, demonstrating the judgment, discipline, and critical thinking required to join the program before earning promotion to Astronaut Cadet. From there, participants transition into the Ground Control career path, developing the leadership, communication, and operational coordination skills necessary to guide organizations through routine operations, degraded conditions, and crisis.

GUIDE THE MISSION

CONSEQUENCE INFORMED ENGINEERING PATH

Engineer the Mission

The Consequence Informed Systems Engineering track prepares architects, engineers, developers, and technical leaders to design Artificial Intelligence systems capable of sustaining mission critical operations under uncertainty, failure, and attack. As organizations increasingly depend upon AI to automate business processes, augment decision making, and control operational environments, engineers must move beyond building intelligent systems to engineering resilient systems capable of supporting the mission when conditions change.

Inspired by NASA's engineering culture and decades of mission assurance practices, students begin as Test Pilots, developing the disciplined mindset required to understand complex systems before earning promotion to Astronaut Cadet. They then transition into the Systems Engineering career path, learning how resilient architectures are conceived, engineered, integrated, tested, and continuously improved throughout their operational lifecycle.

ENGINEER THE MISSION

FLIGHT OPERATIONS PATH

Operate the Mission.

The Flight Operations track prepares professionals to safely operate organizations where Artificial Intelligence has become part of everyday business operations. As AI increasingly augments decision making, automation, customer interactions, engineering, and mission critical processes, organizations need operators who understand not only how to leverage AI effectively, but how to recognize when intelligent systems can no longer be trusted.

Inspired by the operational discipline of human spaceflight, students progress from Test Pilot to Mission Commander, developing the knowledge and practical experience required to operate AI enabled organizations under both normal and degraded conditions. Through immersive simulations, participants learn to manage AI assisted workflows, coordinate with technical and business teams, adapt to changing mission conditions, and maintain operational effectiveness during AI disruptions.
